Our Minister Rev. Abhishek Solomon
I am from a city called Lucknow, in the north of India. Lucknow, also known as “Little Pakistan”, is predominantly a Muslim city, strongly influenced by the Mughal Empire from the Middle East. It still has a rich Mogul culture with art and palaces from the period. But there are still a lot of Hindus and Christians in the city, and they coexist in relative harmony. Growing up, we would all celebrate each other’s festivals. There would be Muslims celebrating Christmas and Christians celebrating Muslim festivals.
I am an avid reader and a student of continental philosophy, psychoanalysis, and theology. I am currently pursuing my postgraduate studies at the University of Otago.
As a parish minister, I continue to wrestle with the nature of faith in all its historical finitude. My musings on the nature of faith have put me in touch with the work of Paul Tillich, Soren Kierkegaard, and other continental philosophers such as Sigmund Freud, George W Hegel, Jacques Lacan, Fredrich Nietzsche, Jacques Derrida and Slavoj Zizek.
On a lighter note, I love cricket, and yes, my loyalty rests with the Black Caps!
